Whether to provide the best biological research course

    招生官答疑

    Yuki Kurosu

What ACT and SAT scores do administrators prefer to see when looking at one's resume?

    • Will Niver

Hey Yuki: We do not have a minimum required score for either the SAT or the ACT since we consider many factors in our admissions process. Also, we do not report an average SAT or ACT score. Rather, we report the middle 50 percent range of our admitted students. This means that 25 percent of the students we admit score higher than the upper end of the range, and 25 percent score below the lower end of the range. How many business and marketing classes are provided?

Hey Derek, we offer a major in Economics, a minor in Finance, and a certificate in Markets and Management Studies. Some students also incorporate business and marketing in their Program II course of study (that allows students to design their own major). Duke is also home of the Fuqua School of Business. For more information about undergraduate courses, check out http://trinity.duke.edu/.

Hey Zoelexis: our deadline for undergraduate admissions was Jan. 2 this year. If you're a transfer student, the deadline is tonight (March 15) at 11:59 for an online application (we're only accepting sophomore transfers this year).

Hey Katie: We do have a dance team, the Duke Dancing Devils: http://www.dancingdevils.imsports.duke.edu/. Student dance groups such as Dance Black, DanceSlam, Defining Movement, Duke Chinese Dance Troupe, Duke Dhamaka, On Tap, Precision Step Team and Sabrosura energize the campus dance scene, as well.

Does Duke have a pre-med program?

    • Will Niver

Hey Mayra: At Duke, we have a Health Professions Advising team, and they help students gain a solid foundation in pre-health required courses while students can major in whatever field interests them. Many students also broaden their interest in medicine by working in the Duke University Medical Center next to West Campus or pursuing summer experiences or research opportunities. We do not have a major called 'pre-med,' but Duke is a wonderful place to begin a career in the medical field.

Where can I find information about Duke's financial aid packages?

    • Sue Coon Duke University

Dear Alesha: The website for Duke's financial aid is www.finaid.duke.edu. You can also access it from the link at the left hand side of this page, which takes you to www.admissions.duke.edu. We give away millions of dollars in financial aid annually, and we are need-blind, so for US citizens and long-term permanent residents, it doesn't matter as we evaluate your application whether you have applied for financial aid or not. To make it short and sweet, I want to be an AB Scholar at Duke. How do I make that happen?

Dear Madison: Thanks for your interest in Duke University! The A. B. Duke Scholars are awarded to some of our finest applicants. Around 1-2% of our applicants receive merit scholarships, including the A. B. Duke Scholarships. Just like any Duke applicant, you will want to follow your academic and extracurricular passions in high school, and do as well as you can in all areas. I do want to mention that nearly 50% of our students receive need-based financial aid, which may also be of interest to you! Best regards, Sue Coon, Senior Assistant Director, Undergraduate Admissions
    Crystal Young

Hello, my name is Crystal Young and I've been been planning to apply to Duke since 5th grade. I'm wondering what do I need to make on the ACT and is there anything more I can do to meet and go above Duke's standards?

    • Sue Coon Duke University

Dear Crystal: We do not have any minimum score for the ACT, though most students find if they take it once in their junior year and once in their senior year, that is a good way to get some of their best scores. When we review an application, we also look at how you have challenged yourself with the rigor of your course selections, your grades, recommendations, and extracurricular activities, as well as your essays. The testing is just one part of your application. Please check out the "Who We Are Looking For" part of our www.admissions.duke.edu website for more information. My best, Sue Coon, Senior Assistant Director, Duke University Undergraduate Admissions

    Nylah Burton

Good evening! My name is Nylah and I am planning on applying to Duke University. However, I am an 11th grade homeschooled student. I was wondering if you could give me detailed information on what would be expected or encouraged for me to include in my application?
    • 2012-02-21
    • Comments(1)
    • Will Niver

Hey Nylah: We require a transcript (homemade transcripts are perfectly acceptable as long as they list the courses of study a student has followed for the four years of high school or equivalent), recommendations from three instructors (at least two of whom are not related to the applicant—and employers, religious leaders, sports coaches or other adults can write these recommendations if all academic instruction takes place in the home), essays, an extracurricular activities list, and standardized testing. Applicants are not required to present a GED or proof of accreditation. There is no separate application for Duke's merit scholarships; all students are considered for merit scholarships on the basis of their application for admission. More information about applying to Duke as a homeschooled student may be found here: http://admissions.duke.edu/jump/applying/apply_homeschooled.html
    John Pamintuan

Hello my name is John and I was wondering what my chances are in getting accepted into Duke with good SAT, ACT, and GPA scores alone? I have not participated in any volunteer service or extra-curricular activities. I wish I could?

    • Sue Coon Duke University

Dear John: We are looking for students who will have academic and extracurricular impact at Duke. If there is a reason that you have not participated in any extracurricular activities, such as a need to look after your siblings, a disability of some sort, or a long daily commute to school, we would certainly take that into consideration as we review your application.
